AskFreelancers: Music You Listen to When Working

AskFreelancers is where I ask freelancers a question, this time I asked the question, “What styles or artists do you listen to when working on contracts”. Personally I like to listen to music without lyrics when I am coding because it requires concentration and I often find myself distracted as I start to sing along, so I tend to prefer more jazz and chillout music, however when I am designing I tend to listen to more Indie and the older tunes that my parents would listen to.

Creativity is like a breeze: fleeting, invisible and just as hard to catch. Some people relax and let it come to them. Some people work hard to bring it to bear. I’m going to tell you how you can do something enjoyable and effortlessly infuse yourself with creativity. Listen to music.

Whatever your discipline, music is an important factor in your creativity. However, ask most designers about the relationship between design and music and you'll often get a confused response - to some, the link is so intrinsic and consuming that it's almost invisible. Quite simply, it is design that brings music to life visually.
Design Tip: Music May Drown Out Your Message

Music by itself isn't controversial: virtually everyone likes to hear or perform it. But they like to choose when, where, and what to listen to. A Web site is rarely the ideal presentation method. Visitors may just tune out if music is turned on.
Drawar : Which kinds of music do you listen to while working?

What kind of music do you prefer to listen to while getting work done? I usually like something calming like some jazz, or if I have to meet that 5pm deadline that I promised I turn up the BPM to some dance music lol. What works for you ?
Music To Feed Your Soul During Crucial Design Moments

Try listening to these with your eyes closed for at least a few seconds, if even but for just a fleeting glimpse of sheer calm. I guarantee you will drift away into your own creative zone perfectly after listening to at least one of these songs. Any & all of these songs can be found on iTunes, if not Last.fm or Pandora. So kick back, turn up your speakers/headphones, crank the bass, and just fall into yourself…Here are 8 songs to design to.
Should we listen to music while working? The designers answer.

Following is the opinion of my fellow designers, most of them being music listeners when working. Some of them listen to music because they think it helps them to get in the zone and others do so to override external noise. Most seem to agree that not every type of music is suitable for getting things done.
The Design Observer's Playlist

Let’s try a bit of blog based research here. Let’s try and find out what Design Observer readers are listening to, and build up our own blog playlist. I’m predicting a mixed bag, with not very much Yngwe Malmsteen. But I could be wrong.
