As the video game industry continues to evolve, the demand for qualified animators in the field continues to grow, too. As a video game animator, you can use the skills and knowledge gained from animation courses to give consumers more entertaining and realistic-looking video games. Animators also work in the motion picture, television, computer software, and advertising industries. Animators' often sketch preliminary ideas, backgrounds, and characters by hand, and then use specialized computer software to streamline and animate the images, adding special effects and audio afterward. Some animators work closely with software engineers, especially when complex programming is paired with the moving images.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2009 there were 28,800 animators employed in the U.S. and the median annual wage was $62,810. Job growth for animators is expected to grow at a rate of about 12 percent between 2008 and 2018.
