Web design is a broad field that encompasses different aspects related to design and programming, including creating a look and feel, producing graphics, program development, and website management. Two-year associate's and four-year bachelor's degree programs are available. Although a two-year degree is acceptable, most employers prefer applicants who hold a bachelor's degree.

Web Design Schools: What to Do after You Graduate?
After taking Web design classes, you could pursue any of a handful of related careers, including website designer, web developer, and webmaster.
Website designer. These artists create website structures, including navigation schemes and naming conventions; page layouts, and conceptual designs. They should have solid job prospects between 2008 and 2018, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The median annual wage for graphic designers, the occupation category that includes web designers, was $43,180 in 2009.
Web developer. Web developers are concerned with the technical, rather than the design, build websites and applications via coding and writing markup. Demand for them is expected to be strong between 2008 and 2018, notes the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Webmaster. Webmasters maintain websites. They ensure Web servers, hardware, and software are operating properly, approve site content, generate and revise Web pages, respond to user comments, collect and analyze traffic data, and more.
Web developers and Webmasters fall into the BLS job category of computer network, systems, and database administrators, whose median annual salary was $67,710 in 2009.
