All About Gif 89A - This page is a very technical explanation of the GIF89a format and how it allows animation.
A Few Scanning Tips - The Gif and Scanning
Create a Transparent Gif in Photoshop - If you're using Photoshop 3.0, you'll need to get the Gif89A Export Filter from Adobe. Later versions should automatically install this filter: you'll find it within Photoshop under File/Export/Gif89 Export. If it's not there, try reinstalling Photoshop

Daub File Format Collections : GIf - GIF was invented by Compuserve for their online service, but the specifications were made publicly available. GIFs can hold multiple bitmaps of up to 256 colors each, using LZW compressed raster data to minimize file sizes. (Yes, it can hold more than 256 colors total, and yes, that's the patented compression)
FAQ: Converting GIF or JPG to PNG - The GIF format for images is very popular. Nearly every graphics program supports it. However, there are several problems with GIF (Gif rhymes with Jiffy peanut butter.) GIF was born in the days of very slow modems. To make the images smaller, GIF allowed only 256 colors. This is okay for icons. But GIF is useless for photos. When you convert a photograph into a GIF, quite a bit of the image is lost.
FARP - Saving pictures, file formats ... explains about gif and jpeg compression
File Types and Optimization - This lesson is designed to help you understand file types and file optimization. In this lesson, you will learn about GIF, JPG and PNG file formats. This lesson uses Adobe's "Save for Web" feature, located in Illustrator and Photoshop. Adobe ImageReady offers the same features, but is set up a little differently. It is recommended that you attend the class lectures to get the full understanding of this lesson.
GIF89A - This section includes a byte-for-byte break down of the Netscape Application Loop Block. These pages are for people wishing to understand the technical merits of the formats and how it works inside. I include links to the original Compuserve specifications for GIF87a and GIF89a formats.

GIF - a Whatis.com definition - Graphics Interchange Format
Gif - A What is Definition - The GIF (pronounced DJIF by many, including its designer; pronounced GIF with a hard G by many others) stands for Graphics Interchange Format and is one of the two most common file formats for graphic images on the World Wide Web. The other is the JPEG.

The Gif Format - About the Gif format
The GIF file format - GIF is a file format that should not really be used for prepress, it is far more suited for web design or to exchange images through e-mail or newsgroups.
GIF - Compuserve's Graphics Interchange Format
GIF, JPEG or PNG? - Here are some file formats you may have seen before. They have one thing in common: they don't belong on the Web. Before we go into these "leftover" formats, let's summarize why the three formats we've talked about so far are good to use on the Web.
Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) - (.GIF file extension) There have been raging debates about the pronunciation. The designers of GIF say it is correctly pronounced to sound like Jiff. But that seems counter-intuitive, and up in my hills, we say it sounding like Gift (without the t).
Image File Formats - Choosing the right file format to save your images in is of vital importance. There are three image formats in constant use on the net — GIF, JPG and PNG. Each is suited to a specific type of image, and matching your image to the correct format should result in a small, fast-loading graphic. Saving and exporting into these formats will require a decent image editor.
JPG vs GIF - JPG vs GIF
JPG vs GIF - I originally wrote this article way back when (1995-96?), before the software that is around today was created. The basic concepts still apply, but the techniques have become obsolete. I highly recommend using Adobe's products for web development, including Photoshop, Image Ready and GoLive. They are my personal prefrences.
JPG vs. GIF vs. PNG - Following are the most commonly used graphics file formats for putting graphics on the World Wide Web and how each differs from the others.
GIF - Graphics Interchange Format - GIF is a data stream-oriented file format used to define the transmission protocol of LZW-encoded bitmap data. GIF images may be up to eight bits (256 colors) in depth and are always compressed. Despite the fact that GIF supports only 8-bits worth of colors, and the multimedia extensions introduced in the 89a release have not been widely utilized, GIF still remains a popular choice for storing lower resolution image data.
GIF vs. JPG -Which Is Best?
GIF Format - GIF is the format of choice for line art - GIF pronounced with either a hard or soft g—jif or gif—stands for Graphics Interchange Format. The GIF file format uses lossless compression to keep file sizes as small as possible.
Gif Wizard - GIF Wizard reduces GIFs, JPGs and BMPs up to 90% without sacrificing quality. Crop, resize, rotate, adjust colors and compress in one integrated online editor.
The Graphics File Format Page These pages contain specifications for various graphics file formats; along with a number of relevant graphics utilities, information, and URLs.

Transparent gifs - The GIF89 transparent color extension allows an image to specify a transparent color, which can then be displayed as the same color as the background on which the image is to be displayed....a tutorial to show you how.

Photoshop 5.5 - Optimizing Web Graphics
Preparing Graphics for the Web - GIF File Format - GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format, and was originally developed by the folks at Compuserve. The format includes some key features which makes it a unique and valuable format for the World Wide Web. These features include file compression, transparency, interlacing and storage of multiple images within a single file which allows for a primitive form of animation. More on these topics later.

Smooth, Tight Images For The Web in Photoshop - There are any number of methods you can use to optimize and deploy nice smooth images as gif files to the Web. Usually it's much better however to "pixelsmith" the image by hand for the best results. After we took a look at the of this reader's problem, we knew this was a case for some rather serious pixelsmithing...
Web Style Guide - The GIF
What is the GIF graphics file format? - The Graphical Interchange Format (GIF) is one of the most widely used image formats on the web. GIF files are recognizable by their .gif file extension. GIF is suitable for images with sharp edges and relatively few gradations of color, such as line art, cartoons, and text. You can also create background transparencies and animations using GIF images.
