For many years the debate over which is best Thermal or Piezo technology on large format printers has confused many a potential customer. Which is best?

PIEZO PRINTERS -
advantages

THERMAL PRINTERS -
advantages

High print speeds
Cost effective user replaceable print heads

And the disadvantages?

Print heads need to be replaced more frequently
Difficult colour matching
Less wide colour gamut

Now you know the pros and con’s the decision now is which machine is best?

Recent technological advances mean the choice is vast with all manufactures offer a solution for both methods of printing.

Canons thermal range called the imagePROGRAF include a larger range of colour cartridges than has been seen before. Previously manufacturers had used a six colour system to enhance half tones and mid tones which gave better results that the old four colour system there were however gaps in the colour range.

The way round this was to create a twelve colour system that includes the traditional colours you would expect to find plus three tones of black and red, green and blue. The results are excellent - combined with the high speed of thermal printing this the perfect solution.

Hewlett Packard meanwhile has also opted for a 12 colour system with their Designjet range. This differs to the Canon range in that the printer offers a gloss optimiser which eliminates bronzing on gloss medias. This combined with the wide colour gamut makes it an ideal solution.

The latest Epson Stylus Pro range features a new ink system which uses an enhanced magenta cartridge to compete with the twelve colour systems from HP and Canon. This range also features new drivers and firmware increasing print speeds of up to 40% add to this the new 64″ offering for the graphic and pay for prints markets and you have another quality solution from Epson.
