<description>Love this or lump it. I'm an established designer in TV, film and print, and have several emmys. Alan is WRONG. There are absolute rules that will get you FIRED or sent packing from an interview if you either follow your heart or ignore trends. Reality is, the money you make is directly based on trends and what the client wants. If for a second you think that you will make a living based on your own crazy creative juices, you're in for a surprise. COrporate work, branding etc... your bread and butter, will be mindless and boring. %.00001 of the crazy stuff you see on the web, the stuff you see that some guy did for Nike, is stuff you will never do. The above link isn't so much geared towards visual design as it is typography, but there are good points. My recommendation would be not to EVER listen to internet comments or anything on the nets for that matter, but to talk to established people in the industry (not your buddy that does business cards) and get their two cents. There are so many directions to go towards (TV, film, print, web) that you can't lump it all together. Personally, I stay away from web like the plague as the clients and revisions aren't worth my time. Anyways, good luck to everyone trying to make a buck this way. Prepare to "sell out", just a warning... but ALWAYS make time to do your own thing and develop your own style. Remember that this quality time will be on your dime, and not whomever you work for. It's that rare moment that your personal style is recognized and you can actually go to town for a client... but don't think that the moment that happens means you drop the corporate crap. $70k in Irvine, CA for mindless corporate crap.

<description>There is no point in having hard and fast rules in graphic design. Things either work visually and informationally or they don't. One of the biggest ongoing mistakes is actually trying to be hip and keeping up with the latest trends. Things are constantly changing but good design is timeless even if it might be described as old school. If you are producing work you believe in and are excited by what you do you won't go far wrong.</description>
