It kinda depends on what you are wanting to do seeing how there are thousands of things you can do, and thousands of things that can go wrong. The main problem is getting a host that doesn't support what you need. I've seen hosts not support any server side code (aka php and asp.net) so thats the main one.

Once you find a host that does have the functionality that you need, then the most common problem I run into is an unresponsive support team.

Many places that are competing completely on cost do so by having a nearly non-existent support team or one that really has very little experience so even if they get back to you they are not helpful.

I agree, though every now and then I will stumble across one. Why be in the business if you can't even support something that so many sites need nowadays.

The 2 common problems with my current shared hosting provider are:
- they don't provide sufficient technical support
- they server uptime is less than 98% in the past 1 year

The most common problems for the provider side are likely to be technical.

The most common problems for the client side I would say is with the support area.

There are more and more providers out there as time goes by, but just a few show careness for clients, and that is, most of the time, due to the size of the company (more employees who don't care for the business, but for their salary) or the improvisation on others (having a website online with a shopping cart).

Add on top of that, overselling. There should be none, but if they're going to do it, it's a shame that they not control it at least.

My 0.02 cents

There has been a rapidly rising demand for web hosting services and many of the part-time basis-basement operations have found it virtually impossible to meet the new quality and service demands of web sites.
Many who had previously gotten away with shoddy services and a technical service department that was just an answering machine where all callers including clients with emergency situations left their messages.
You may be unfortunate enough to still be using a hosting service like this one. Our advice is that it is too costly in today’s net environment.

I agree with you because before I used my current web host, I always encounter such problems.

You are your own 'Server Administrator'.
Hosting companies get paid for 'hosting', and that's pretty much all you get.

The free service do not requrie private data because they do not need your payment details. On the paid web hosting providers there are payment info needed to indetify person avoid fraud orders which have place now.
